Dusky Flathead
The dusky flathead is the bread-and-butter estuary fish of Sydney Harbour and the Hawkesbury, an ambush predator that lies buried on the sand waiting for a meal. Easy to target, great fun on soft plastics and superb on the plate, the "dusky" is a favourite for anglers of every level.
About the dusky flathead
Dusky flathead are the largest of the estuary flatheads and a genuine Sydney icon. Flat, broad-headed and beautifully camouflaged, they bury themselves in the sand and mud of the estuaries and harbour flats, then explode up to engulf a passing baitfish, prawn or lure. The big females, the “crocs”, can push past a metre and are usually released to keep breeding.
They are found right through Sydney Harbour, Botany Bay and the Hawkesbury, feeding on the flats, drop-offs and weed edges. They pull hard in short bursts and, at the right size, deliver mild, flaky white fillets that are among the best estuary eating in NSW. Their willingness to eat a lure makes them one of the most popular light-tackle targets going.

Soft plastics and prawns on the drift
Dusky flathead are one of the easiest estuary fish to target, which makes them perfect for a fun day on the harbour.
The proven methods
Drift the flats, drop-offs and channel edges and hop a soft plastic or a lightly weighted prawn along the bottom, duskies are ambush feeders, so they usually hit on the drop or the pause. Cover ground until you find them, and where there is one there are often more. Fresh bait works just as well as lures, and because they sit on the sand you rarely have to fish deep. All the gear is on board and ready to go.
