Snapper
Pink-flanked, blue-flecked and prized on the plate, snapper are the reef fish Sydney anglers chase year in, year out. They hold on reefs from just outside the Heads to the wider offshore grounds, and a big "red" on soft plastics is one of the most satisfying catches going.
About the snapper
Snapper are unmistakable, deep pink to red bodies scattered with electric-blue spots, and the older, bigger fish grow a pronounced hump on the head and nose that earns them the nickname “old man snapper”. They range from small “reddies” over the inshore reefs to serious models out wide, and they feed hard on the change of light and tide.
Around Sydney they hold on reef and gravel country from just off the beaches out to the deeper offshore grounds, so you do not have to travel far to find them. They pull hard, fight in bursts, and their delicate, slightly sweet fillets make them one of the best eating fish in NSW waters.

The proven methods
Drift the reefs and hop a soft plastic down the drop-offs, snapper love a slow, natural sink, and the take is often on the drop. When the fish want bait, a lightly weighted pilchard or fresh strip fished on the change of light and tide is deadly. Fish clean lines over rough ground, keep a bit of berley going, and be ready for the bigger reds that move up to feed in low light. All the gear is on board and ready to go.
