If winter is about patience, summer is about action. Warm water pushes down the coast, the big pelagics move in, and the days are long enough for a proper session. It is a brilliant time to be on the water around Sydney, as long as you fish smart. Here are our top five summer fishing tips.

1. Fish Early and Late
In the heat of summer the fish, and the fishing, are best at the ends of the day. A dawn start beats the sun, the boat traffic and the midday lull, and the evening bite can be red-hot as things cool off. Book an early trip and you will often have the best of the day before it even warms up.
2. Chase the Summer Species
Summer is prime time for the glamour fish. Marlin and mahi mahi turn up out wide, kingfish are at their best, and bonito, bream and whiting keep things busy closer in. Match your trip to what is running, and check our seasons guide for who is biting when.
3. Follow the Warm Water and the Bait
Summer fishing is all about the warm East Australian Current. Look for temperature breaks, current lines and, above all, bait. Working birds diving on a bait school are a dead giveaway that predators are underneath, so keep your eyes up as well as on the sounder.
If winter is about patience, summer is about action.
4. Stay Sun-Smart and Hydrated
The flip side of those long days is a lot of sun. Slip on a long-sleeve shirt, slop on plenty of sunscreen, slap on a hat with a strap and wear polarised sunnies. Bring more water than you think you need. A comfortable crew fishes longer and better. Our guide on what to take on a charter has the full list.
5. Get Out Wide
Summer is game season, so if you have ever wanted to chase a marlin, a mahi mahi or a tuna, this is the time. The bigger fish are out along the shelf, which is exactly where our game and deep sea charters shine.
