We run game, reef, jig and sport fishing all year round, and our crew know exactly when each fish is on the chew. Here is a season-by-season rundown of the species you can target in Sydney waters.
Sydney Fishing Seasons, Species by Species
Every species has its window, and many overlap, so there is always something worth chasing. Use this as a rough guide, then get in touch and we’ll tell you exactly what is firing the week you want to fish.
- Australian Bass: best from November through April. Bass fishing is banned in June, July, August and September.
- Blue-eye Trevalla: you can catch them in Sydney’s waters at any time of the year.
- Blue Marlin: best in the warmer water, between January and March.
- Bluefin Tuna: off the coast of Cronulla between June and September, peaking in August.
- Bonito: the torpedo-shaped bonito are easiest to catch between December and May.
- Bream: the best time is high season, between January and June.
- Flathead: best from April to May and September to October.
- Flounder: any time of the year.
- Hapuka: the season runs from August to March.
- Kingfish: September to December is the best time to book a kingfish charter.
- Mahi Mahi: most likely in December, January and February.
- Morwong: pretty much all year round in Sydney.
- Pearl Perch: the summer months of December, January and February are peak season.
- Pigfish: available year-round in Sydney waters.
- Australian Salmon: best between November and March.
- Snapper: June to September is the best time (peak pink snapper season).
- Tailor: the best months are November, December, January and February.
- Silver Trevally: about all year, but easiest from May through to September.
- Yellowfin Tuna: August and September are the best months.
- Yellowtail Amberjack: most likely between January and April.
